Title: Peculiar obstructions in string vacua and cosmology

Abstract: It has often been observed that certain possibilities which arise routinely in arbitrary quantum field theories do not seem to occur in those low energy effective theories which originate from trustworthy solutions in string theory. In the early part of this talk, this point will be illustrated with the help of a concrete example in the context of a specific class of vacuum solutions in string theory. In the later part of the talk, other similar obstructions shall be described and possible implications for cosmology will be discussed.
