Abstract: Skyrmions are topological spin textures which are of interest for spin-based memories in metallic magnets. I will review some basic aspects of skyrmions and skyrmion crystals, and then discuss their potential optical signatures, possible issues with indirect experimental identification of skyrmions, and explore how electron interaction effects in skyrmion crystals could potentially induce new types of broken symmetry phases.
